Samuel May was the son of Henry (1770-1883) and Mary Ann (1780-1852) May and according to his second marriage certificate was born in Cork, Ireland. His family came to Canada sometimes around 1827-29) and farmed land near Trenton and Brighton, Ontario. Samuel met and married Lucinda Hetherington (1821-1880) and they had 14 children:

- Lucinda (1841-42); Mary Ann (1842-1935); Ellen (1844-1925); Mary Elizabeth (1845-1901); Thomas Henry (1847-1915); Sarah Lucinda (1849-1934); John Thorpe (1850-1936); William Charles Gilbert (1852-1934); Samuel James (1854-??); Margaret Amelia (1856-1930); George Hetherington (1857-1929); Livinia (1858-1858); Robert Wesley (1861-1943); and Fred Allan (1866-1925).

After Lucinda died, Samuel remarried, this time to Emma Baker in 1881. Emma was born in England. 

In 1891 Robert Wesley May married Ida Eloise Evans in Trenton. They had two children, Francis Harold (1891-1978) and Howard Stanley (1892-1995).
