The Workhouse was one of a number built by 1843 to provide assistance to paupers who needed food and shelter. Families were seperated when they entered and usually never saw each other again. Often difficult and pointless work was undertaken so that the paupers would not see the regime as a viable alternative to life outside.
Carrickmacross Workhouse is now restored into a Community Training, Resource and Heritage Centre.
