Robert (Mc)Collum was born on 26 Sept 1864 in Cooneen, Aghalurcher, Fermanagh. He was the eldest child of John (McCollum) and Eliza Baxter.

He was a stone mason like his father.

He married Eliza Brown on 29 July 1889 at the Methodist Church, (Brookeborough?). Robert & Eliza migrated to Sydney Australia later that year. They travelled with Eliza's parents Forbes and Eliza(Steen) Brown of Grogey; sisters Annabella (Brown) &  husband John Kerry and Mary Jenny Brown. The two Brown brothers - John Edward born 1862 and Forbes born 1866 were already in NSW Australia. Also a neighbour Bill Wilson.

They all lived in Cooma, Nsw until 1895 when then moved to York Estate near Penrith (northern parts of Sydney) at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

Robert & Eliza had John Steen Clare 1890; Forbes Edward Wesley 1891; Ethel Jane 1892 (my grandmother); Robert Alfred Fletcher 1893; William Arthur 1895.

Robert died in 1920; Eliza died in 1913 - both are buried in Penrith Cemetery.

  • He must have known Samuel and William Balfour who went to Penrith in Australia at the same time and they were also from Aghalurcher Fermanagh.  They were farmers but became policemen.

  • I just read Samuel's obituary in Trove. I don't know of any connection between the two families, but 'a home county' shared always a draw for them I'm sure!
