Edward "Ned" McCormack was born on 12 Oct 1893, named after his maternal uncle. He was the son of John McCormack and Mary Jane McDermott, one of seven siblings. He was born in house 5 in Carrowkeel, witnessed by Jane Cox of Kye/Corgarrow. His godparents were Peter Lynch and Brigid Conlon. He went to Drummullin National School.

Both of his parents died within five years of each other, his mother in 1897 and his father in 1902. He was apprenticed to his father's cousin Michael Lynch, a blacksmith of Carrowkeel, and stayed over at his house to learn the trade. His older brothers Thomas and James took care of the farm while John was apprenticed to a tailor. The youngest child, Nan, only five, was sent to the Sisters of Mercy in Roscommon. Kate and Julia remained at home.

He bought the forge on Chapel Street in Elphin and worked there. Ned married his maternal second cousin Mary Josephine McDermott (also the niece of his sister in law Maggie Dufficy) of Clooneybrennan in 1936. They had five children.

He died on 2 June 1978.

  • My husband's line is John McCormick (b.1827 Lobinstown, Meath) who descends from Hugh McCormick (1814 Kellystown, Rathkenney, Meath) > Edward MacCormick (c 1796 Meath).  I'm wondering if these lines might be cousins back a way. Have you done DNA with any of the companies?
