Matthew Maher was born 15 Apr 1830 at Ennistimon, Clare, Ireland to Michael Maher and Anna Doolen. The fifth child (4th boy), Matthew Maher had siblings Patrick, Mary, John, Michael, Margaret, Anne and Thomas. The Maher family lived in the area of Ballybreen near KIlfenora.

On 17 Jul 1861 Matthew married Bridget "Biddy" Slattery, daughter of Patrick Slattery and Mary Byrt. Matthew and Bridget had eight children. These were Mary, Michael, Mary (2), Elizabeth, Matthew, Patrick, Thomas and Laurence.

In 1865, Matthew and father Michael and wife Bridget and Matthew's son Michael emigrated to Australia aboard the ship 'Lightning' and settled in the state of Victoria. For a time they lived at Malmsbury.

At some point the family decided to leave Victoria and went north to the town of Deniliquin where they settled permanently. Matthew Maher died on 24 Dec 1888 and is buried in Deniliquin Cemetery with wife Bridget. The father of Matthew is buried in White Hills Cemetery in Bendigo, dying a year after the family arrived from Clare.

The descendants of Matthew Maher are still numerous in Deniliquin. One of Matthew's sons, Patrick William Maher was the Mayor of Deniliquin.
