Matin was born in 1834, son of John Donohue and Bridget Daley of Carabane, Galway. He worked the farm of his father in Turo until the age of fifteen when he immigrated to America. The farm in Turo is now a game park. In America he lived in Patterson New Jersey, where he married Bridet Connolly in 1857. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the New Jersy light artillary and was assigned to Battery B. At the Battle of Gettysburgh this battery fired 1,342 rounds that day, more than any other battery in a single day during the war.  Michael Hannifen, author of the battery's history, relates how during the Gettysburg battle he was knocked unconscious, and as he came to, found Martin bending over him with a canteen, tear stricken and saying, "Mike, shure you're not kilt entirely, for 'tis I would be lonesome without you." (p.74) Martin would be discharged disabled due to a wound he received at Fredericksburg 22 March 1864.
