Place of migration
Migrated to/Born in Australia

We believe Mary Collins migrated to Australia in 1850 with the Earl Grey scheme. She is my husband's 3xgreat grandmother. In Australia she had a difficult life and we want to honour her by acknowledging her family in Ireland.

In addition to Collins, names like McCarthy, Barry, Hartnett, Sweeney, Lenihan, and Cronin keep coming up with DNA matches, as does the village of Abbeyfeale.

I'd be most grateful to anyone who has documented those families to get in touch.

  • Hi ,

My 2xGGF THomas Collins was born in Abbeyfeale 14 Mar 1833. He married Anne Lane in Duagh, Kerry. They arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 13 Sep 1858 on the 'Albion'. I have tentatively used irish patronymics to determine Thomas's parents names and I have come up with Patrick Collins and Mary ?

Thomas died in Melbourne 6 Apr 1914.

Perhaps your Mary Collins is related. I have Hartnett's and McNulty coming up in DNA matches. These are low cMs which likely means a few generations back from 1830s. I would be interested in sharing  my tree which is on Ancestry.

I live in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

    Regards,

    Christine Collins

  • Hi Christine

Thanks so much for getting in touch.

If you have tested with Ancestry do you match with a Colin or Stanley Hitchins, my husband's father and uncle? Their results are also availble on MyHeritage, GEDmatch and FTDNA.

Yes, I can see McNulty among the family names of their matches.

You can find the tree for Stan at https://www.ancestry.com.au/family-tree/tree/34427380/family?cfpid=1866… Ancestry username is 61discovery61.

Hope we can find a connection. There's bound to be one.

    Kind regards, Sandy.

  • Hi Sandy,

I have looked at your tree and checked my DNA, unfortunately I don't have any matches to Stanley or Colin Hitchins. It is highly likely there is a connection as I noticed that William and Mary Harnett were sponsors on Mary Collins baptism certifcate. I do have a number of DNA matches with Harnett and Hartnett.

Here is my Ancestry tree - collinsc40

Keep in touch we might be able to sort out the connection.
