Mary Murphy was born in Abbeyfeale, County Limerick on April 10th,1888.  Her parents were Thomas Murphy and Joanna Leahy Murphy. 

She was the youngest child of Thomas and Joanna and was oprhaned at about age 6.  She was put in the care of the nuns at Good Shepherd Convent in Limerick. 

In 1908 she immigrated to the United States aboard the Umbria and settled in St. Louis, MO where some members of the Murphy family had previously settled. 

She married John Markle, an immigrant from Austro-Hungary in 1914.
